On 8 October, 2005, a massive earthquake rocked northern Pakistan & Azad Kashmir, killing over 73,000 people and injuring more than 128,000. Around 3.5 million people were left homeless by the 7.6 magnitude quake, which flattened hundreds of thousands of houses, schools, health clinics and shops over a vast and mountainous expanse of land. The Azad Kashmir's capital town of Muzaffarabad was one of the most heavily-affected localities.

Sadako Trust Mission

The Sadako Trust is aiming to be the Kashmir 's largest non-governmental organization in social sector. We serve without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions.

The prime mission of Sadako Trust is to impart quality peace education to vulnerable children by mobilizing the power of global community participation. Vulnerable children are those who are at greatest risk from situations that threaten their chances to get education, or their capacity to learn with an acceptable level of social and economic security and human dignity. Often, these are victims of natural disasters like as of October 8, 2005 , poverty brought about by socio-economic crises and refugees caused by ugly wars.

The unique network of educational schools - which focuses on peace education to build a more peaceful and tolerant society - is the Trust's principal strength, however, Sadako Trust is also working for the betterment of following social sectors in highly devastated area:

  • Basic health care services in remote rural and Earthquake affected areas.
  • Ensuring environmental sustainability
  • Women development & empowerment
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Poverty alleviation through skill development and micro financing
  • Cultural heritage preservation
  • Rehabilitation of disables
  • Sports and cultural promotion
Cooperation of local and international partners gives Sadako Trust greater potential to support those most in need.
